watch for pianist Richard Sladek
coming in April !
The Oster Regent Theatre offers wonderful acoustics for musical performances. With that in mind, CFCT plans to offer concerts throughout the year that will appeal to a broad spectrum of musical tastes.
The past 2 years saw packed houses for this series of donated musical talent to help us raise money for our Building Fund to preserve the integrity of our hundred year old building. The Celtic Calleigh Concert has become an annual event. Last year the Celtic band "Banish Misfortune" rocked the house with authentic folk music, bagpipers, poetry reading, a guest fiddler, and Irish dancers from Cedar Falls and Ames. The audience clapped and sang and had a delightful time enjoying the lilt of the musical treats.
Watch for announcements of other types of concerts to please the musical preferences of our patrons. Jazz, gospel, classical, rock and roll, and contemporary styles will be explored in this crowd-pleasing CFCT entertainment series. |

Susan Werner received a BA in voice at the University of Iowa and MA in voice at Temple University. After initially wanting a career in opera, Werner bagan composing songs on the guitar. Performing around Philadelphia, Boston and New York, she began making a name for herself in the folk music scene in the early 1990's. She eventually moved to Chicago and has recorded 10 albums. Called the "empress of the unexpected" by NPR, singer-songwriter Susan Werner turns another corner in her multifaceted musical career with her vibrant new album, Kicking the Beehive. It’s an 11-song collection of provocative, poignant, lyrical originals that are infused with the rustic roots of American folk, blues and country music. Produced by Rodney Crowell, recorded in Nashville and featuring such all-star guests as Vince Gill, Keb’ Mo’ and Paul Franklin, Kicking the Beehive is a personal project where Werner intuitively explores the full impact of looking beyond the superficial and delving into soulful honesty. Kicking the Beehive is Werner’s follow-up to her 2009 recording, Classics, a compelling pop-meets-classical album of contemporary standards supported by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. “That was a very conservatory project,” Werner said. “There were a lot of string arrangements, and I learned a great deal about arranging and songwriting. But after that, I wanted to do something different.” (Classics was the third in an ear-opening series of innovatively themed projects, including 2008’s “agnostic gospel” album The Gospel Truth that melded Werner’s own tunes written in the traditional gospel tradition and 2004’s I Can’t Be New where she channeled the cabaret standard songwriting of George Gershwin and Cole Porter.)
"Susan Werner, a clever songwriter and an engaging performer, brings literacy and wit back to popular song." — The New Yorker
"Vulnerability has rarely been so witty or concise in modern song." — Boston Herald
"Always an impressive songwriter, Werner continues to compose sharp, funny, compassionate lyrics, a gift rare enough to set her apart..." — The Washington Post |
